The City of Leavenworth approached KDHE's Brownfields Targeted Assessment Program to conduct an assessment of the former Great Western Stove Manufacturing Facility in early 2001. The property was the proposed location for a Carousel Museum along Leavenworth's beautiful Riverfront Corridor.
The assessment was completed, identifying petroleum contamination at the property. The City of Leavenworth entered KDHE's Voluntary Cleanup and Property Redevelopment Program (VCPRP)to property address the petroleum impacts at the site.
Through the VCPRP, approximately 345 cubic yards of petroleum-impacted soil were removed from the property. The property has been successfully cleaned up and is in the final stages of construction. It is anticipated the museum will be open in the Spring of 2005.
